Most people have no idea what life coaches do. So you think you or a friend might need a life coach? Thinking that puts you in an enlightened minority. Life Coaching has become a mainstream profession, focusing on helping people achieve their goals. What you’re saying or thinking is you want yourself or your friend to reach their goals and thrive, both now and in the future.
“Everybody needs a coach…
every famous athlete, every famous performer, has someone who’s the coach…
someone who can help them see themselves
as others see them.”
–Eric Schmidt (former CEO of Google)
When you work with a life coach, you have the opportunity to see your true self without the judgment of other peoples’ values, views, and thoughts. When you finally see that image of yourself, free from what everybody else around you wants you to be or thinks you are, it gets a lot easier to see where you want to go.
Are You Stuck…Maybe?
You’ve got lots of big decisions to make. Here’s just a couple; Will you marry Janet?…yes or no? Will you leave that soul-crushing job or take the raise? Thinking about moving somewhere you love or staying in that same old place? Or go after some big dream you’ve kept a secret for years, or just stay at the factory? You hear one voice that tells you it’s “too big a risk,” and the other says, “go for it,” but with no guarantee of an outcome, you don’t know what to do. Is a coach going to give you an answer?
Not likely. But a good life coach will help you get behind the thoughts and feelings and what-if’s, helping you figure out what’s important to you about the decision and how to listen to all the voices inside you. Your coach won’t make a decision for you, but will help you sort all that mess out so that you know what you want to.
You’re Just a Little Lost…possibly?
You just don’t have any idea what to do next; maybe you just graduated from college, maybe you hate your job, maybe you just take shitty care yourself and don’t know what to do about it. Guilt is an awful thing and you can feel guilty about any of those things. Face it; everybody’s lost before they figure out where they’re going. Your life coach will help you sort out what your personal values really are, not your parents’ values. Those complicated decisions lose their complexity. Imagine that!
Maybe You’re Not as Happy as You Think You Should Be Do you feel like you’re about to lose your mind? Maybe you’re about to have a down nervous breakdown? You can’t tell if you need to change, come, or go. Hmmm? Working with a life coach, you have someone on your side to be with you through the whole process. And then you discover something; the people who are living their personal values, true to them the majority of the time, are happy. If you’re unhappy, look back and see what values you’re not living. Likely as not, it’s not your job, or your town, or your boss, or even your kids making you unhappy; it’s that you and your values are not in alignment—a life coach can help you with that. Promise.
Oh My Gosh, You Are Happy…What Happened?
It’s a rare opportunity to be able to improve your life when you love where you are. Select a life coach when you are happy. Being happy is a great motivator to help you delve into your values and understand what life has in store for you.
Maybe Your Relationship Just Ended
Maybe you’re brokenhearted, maybe you’re thrilled, maybe you just don’t care…get away, it’s a new day, and you can make all new choices. You can be excited about beginning again on your terms, or you can spend your time bumming over how you can’t have what wasn’t good for you anyway.
Here’s the rub. You should figure out what your terms are, what is it you want, and how do you go about getting it next time? With a coach you will explore, clarify, brainstorm, and daydream. You will be able to figure out why your relationships ended up where you are now. If you don’t; well, we all know the old story about doing the same things the same ways and expecting different results.
Maybe You’re Comfortable
Oh yeah, you’re in your comfort zone now, you’re grooving; it all starts and ends right there. You start to sweat as you go a little to slow or fast for yourself . Maybe it’s your job, maybe it’s trouble at home; maybe it’s both. It is indeed great to be comfortable but how long has it been since you had fun? How about some excitement? Your coach is going to encourage you…hold your hand…You coach might just kick you in the butt… You will only reach the goals you want to achieve outside of your comfort zone.
What We Want
Life coaches are interested in where you are now and where you want to go. Here is a secret—no matter what you feel—you’re not broken. You don’t need “fixing.” Left alone, most people are creative and resourceful and whole. You are whole.
A life coach helps you realize that.
